We had another day of outstanding weather on Nov. 2 as we began our cruise at 7:30 from our anchorage behind Queen Bess Island bound for an anchorage by St. Simon’s Island. How fortunate we are to complete our trip under a perfect weather window with sunny days, mild winds and temperatures in the 70’s!
We love cruising through Georgia’s beautiful low country with its undulating landscape and winding rivers. We spent a good part of the day on the South Altamaha River, one of the most scenic that we’ve been on during this trip. It is fairly narrow and winding and its twists and turns require vigilance, but make the trip so much more interesting.
We are seeing many fewer houses on this part of the journey which is fine with us. Traveling through pristine landscapes and anchoring out is such a peaceful and rewarding way to wrap up our trip.
We arrived at our anchorage next to Fort Frederica which is on St. Simon’s Island at about 4:00. No other boats were nearby – we had the place all to ourselves. On our trip north, we had stayed near this site and had explored the fort at some length. This time we stayed on board and relaxed knowing that we’ll be extremely busy over the next few weeks, moving back to Miami Beach, unpacking and setting up our home there, and helping Jonny’s mother find a suitable place to live. We are looking forward to seeing our home as it has undergone some significant renovation while we’ve been away. Those who know Lynn may find it hard to believe that she was so “hands off” on this project, but we have great faith in our friend Aileen who has been managing the entire process for us.
After we anchored, we took this precious time to relax and catch up with our family. We had a simple dinner of salmon, quinoa and summer squash and watched a rather unique movie called Hysteria. Another early night makes us feel close to the land, like farmers – early to bed and early to rise…..
These days are becoming bittersweet for us. The trip has been everything we had hoped for and more and to think of it ending is sad. But if all goes well, we hope to have more opportunities to travel aboard Zendo. There are lots of options for us to explore and we are already talking about the Bahamas, Exumas or Abacos, a return visit to New England, doing the entire Great Loop or maybe the triangle loop. The options are limitless as long as time, money, family and pet obligations allow!
